Chapter Fifteen

Raven!

From somewhere very far away, Raven thought she heard dragons. I’m always hearing dragons. It’s nothing new.

She rolled over on her bed in the girls’ dormitory and drew the thin sheet perfect for warm summer nights up over her head.

Raven, wake up.

I wasn’t dreaming about Leander. The young mage grunted and her eyelids fluttered.

Now!

Her legs kicked out the end of the sheet as she jolted awake and her eyes jerked open. Leander.

Get outside, Raven. Hurry.

She kicked and swiped at the sheet before she finally ripped it off her body. What’s wrong?

I heard Rudy calling. They’re coming.

Bella and Lark? She yanked off the oversized tunic she’d fallen asleep in after her shower and stumbled toward her dresser to retrieve a fresh change of clothes. In her haste to don her pants, she hopped on one foot and scowled as she darted a glance at the window. It’s the middle of the night, isn’t it?

An hour to dawn. Maybe. You should be here when they land.

“They’re not even at the school yet. Great.” She shook her head furiously to clear the fatigue that fought with the surge of urgency racing through her. Finally, she tugged her pants on and slipped another tunic over her head. I’m coming.

As she finished shoving one foot into a boot, Leander sent her an image of the dark early-morning sky and the dragon even bigger than he was who blotted out half the moon overhead. Two riders were on his back.

“I said I’m coming!” She jammed her other boot on and didn’t bother with the laces before she jerked the door to her room open and raced along the hall, down the wide staircase at the back of the dormitory, and across the empty, eerily silent common room before she pushed out of the front door.

The night was warm and almost as quiet as the dorms. Different rhythms of snores, whistles, and grunts rose from the crowded field of citizens, but the thick beating of huge wings in the air came through the clearest. Raven looked up a second before Rudy raced overhead, coming in from the north. No wonder that was so loud.

She sprinted across the cobblestones of the main courtyard, her loose red braid falling apart even more as it whipped out behind her. I’m gonna wake the whole stupid camp running like this with an echo.

Ask them what happened, Raven.

How did you know they were coming?

I told you I heard Rudy. And I…felt it.

So now you feel other dragons too? Where does this stop?

She darted beneath the larger stone archway above Fowler Academy’s front gates and left puffs of fine dirt behind her as she ran down the road. Lark had just dismounted and was helping Bella down from Rudy’s back despite the fact that the huge orange-brown dragon had already lowered as far as his massive size allowed.

“Raven.” Bella held Lark’s forearms even after her feet touched the ground, too shocked to release him. “Are you really—”

“I’m here.” She tried to smile at them as she fought to catch her breath.
